How Robert Stanek Helps Other Writers

Beyond Words. A Look at Robert Stanek's Efforts to Support and Empower Writers Everywhere.

Robert’s Journey to Indie Publishing

Robert’s journey into independent publishing began in 2001 when he faced numerous rejections from major publishers for his Ruin Mist series, despite the manuscripts reaching executive editors at top publishing houses like Tor and Del Rey. His manuscripts caught the attention of Betsy Mitchell, the former Editor-In-Chief at Del Rey, who praised his storytelling. However, the books didn't fit the traditional mold, and he was ultimately encouraged to pursue other avenues.

Unfazed, Robert decided to go independent, which he describes as embracing the freedom to create without limits. “To me, being indie means being independent,” Robert says. “You do the solo chicken dance. You do it your way. You hope for the best.” This philosophy not only fueled his own success but also inspired him to help other writers find their paths.

Robert's Advice to Aspiring Writers

Robert Stanek believes that writing is not just an art but also a discipline. He frequently advises writers to embrace both the creative and business sides of being an author. "If you’re serious about writing, you have to treat it like a job," Robert says. "Set goals, stick to a schedule, and most importantly, write every day."

One of his key pieces of advice is to "tune out the noise." Robert emphasizes the importance of focus and balance, noting that it's easy to get distracted by social media or overwhelmed by the pressures of the industry. “Finding focus and balance is important,” he says. “If you’re having trouble focusing and finding time to write, you have to re-prioritize, find a balance that works.”

Beyond the practicalities, Robert encourages writers to find joy in the process. “Write what you love, write what excites you. Passion is the fuel that will keep you going even when the road gets tough.” Robert Stanek's advice to Aspiring Writers

Balancing Writing and Life

For Robert, writing is a deeply personal endeavor, but it's not the only thing that defines him. He makes time for family, adventure, and relaxation, knowing that a well-rounded life contributes to better storytelling. Whether he’s hiking, exploring new places, or simply spending quality time with loved ones, Robert believes in "playing as hard as you work."

This balance between work and play is what fuels his creativity and keeps his stories fresh. “Sometimes the best ideas come when you’re not at your desk,” he says. “Get out there, experience the world, and let those experiences shape your writing.”
