As an author whose work spans epic fantasy, historical fiction, children’s literature, and nonfiction, I’ve spent decades creating worlds and characters that feel real, authentic, and deeply rooted. The truth is, much of that authenticity has been guided by my own complex, diverse, and deeply American heritage—a heritage shaped by centuries of journeys, struggles, sacrifice, and resilience.

My mother’s father was proudly and purely French, tracing a remarkable lineage back to Normandy, France. Nearly 400 years ago, my French ancestors courageously left Normandy, seeking opportunity and freedom in the New World. They settled in Quebec, where generations of my family lived, loved, built communities, and shaped futures.
This French-Canadian heritage has profoundly influenced my sense of culture, tradition, and resilience. Normandy itself, a place marked by both exquisite beauty and painful history, resonates deeply. These ancestors were bold risk-takers, willing to leave comfort behind for an uncertain future in an unfamiliar land.
This spirit of courage and exploration has guided my own life and my writing—infusing my stories with a sense of adventure, independence, and deep respect for those willing to forge new paths.
Nordic Strength: From Sweden and Norway to America
My mother’s mother carried within her an equally powerful heritage—purely Norwegian, tracing family lines back nearly 400 years through Norway, Denmark, and originally Sweden. These Nordic ancestors, like my French forebears, were explorers and settlers, resilient and adaptive. They crossed boundaries, braved new worlds, and ultimately, journeyed across the Atlantic, seeking the promise of America.
The Nordic heritage runs deep in my family, quietly shaping our traditions, our values, and even our worldview. It instilled in us an appreciation for simplicity, quiet strength, and the unyielding power of perseverance. My stories reflect this strength in characters who endure hardships quietly yet heroically—honoring the understated courage that has defined generations of my ancestors.
Midwest Roots: A Wisconsin Childhood
I was born and raised in Wisconsin, in the heartland of America. The Midwest defined much of my upbringing, offering a childhood filled with the ordinary wonders of small-town America—endless fields, clear skies, community bonds, and stories shared around kitchen tables.
Wisconsin isn’t simply where I come from—it’s part of who I am. The values instilled by a Midwest upbringing—hard work, humility, kindness, and quiet resilience—are deeply embedded in my stories. They’re reflected in the characters of Bugville Critters, in the tight-knit communities of my historical fiction, and in the quiet, steady heroism of the worlds I build.
My Midwest roots remind me that stories aren’t only about grand heroes or dramatic battles—they’re also about everyday lives, ordinary courage, and the quiet dignity found in communities like the ones I grew up in.
A Legacy of Service: Twelve Generations in America’s Wars
My family history in America is inseparable from military service. Twelve generations of my ancestors have fought, bled, and died for this country—through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and beyond.
These ancestors weren’t distant historical figures; they were men and women who made extraordinary sacrifices, driven by duty, honor, and love of country. Their stories weren’t always written down, but they were remembered and passed down with respect, gratitude, and deep reverence.
Their sacrifices shaped me deeply, influencing my decision to serve in the U.S. Air Force. I myself fought and bled in America’s recent conflicts—Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation Provide Comfort, and beyond. My experiences as a combat veteran, my survival through difficult times, and the scars I carry deeply inform my writing, grounding it in realities many readers never experience firsthand.
My Own Military Journey: Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
When I stepped forward to serve my country, I carried the weight and legacy of all those who had come before me. Military service was never simply a duty—it was an honor, a continuation of a tradition stretching back twelve generations. My experiences in war zones, special operations, and my personal battles afterward gave me insights into sacrifice, courage, trauma, and resilience.
In my writing—whether fantasy or historical fiction—this understanding of military life, of its sacrifices and complexities, helps me create deeply human characters who grapple authentically with duty, honor, survival, and healing.

The Reynolds line of our family heritage traces back to the British Isles (Great Britain, Wales, Scotland) and Switzerland. These ancestors brought their own unique traditions, cultures, and stories to America’s shores, shaping family values centered around integrity, community, and hard work.
This diverse European heritage offers layers of tradition and complexity, enriching my storytelling. It adds depth and authenticity to the cultures, histories, and backgrounds I build within my fictional worlds, making them resonate authentically across cultural boundaries.
