My family’s story spans oceans, cultures, and decades, profoundly shaped by my years in Asia, my marriage to my Korean wife, and the beautiful, complex experience of raising our Korean-American children.
This story isn’t simply about crossing borders; it’s about building bridges of understanding, navigating grief and joy, and embracing the richness that comes from blending worlds. This is our Asian-American story, deeply personal and profoundly human.
Finding Home in Asia: The Beginning of My Journey
In the mid-to-late 1980s, my life changed forever when I traveled halfway across the world to Asia, immersing myself in cultures vastly different from the Wisconsin landscapes of my youth. Those years in Asia—rich with new languages, vibrant cultures, and profound friendships—opened my eyes to a broader world, challenging my assumptions and deepening my empathy.
But most importantly, Asia brought me love. I met my future wife, who is from Korea, when I returned to the USA for the first time, and our relationship bridged cultures, languages, and traditions, rooted in mutual respect, understanding, and a deep emotional bond.
Our love story wasn’t simply a romance—it was a profound cultural and emotional journey that reshaped both of our lives.
Marriage Across Cultures: Blending Traditions and Love
In 1989, I married my Korean girlfriend, marking not only the union of two individuals but the merging of two worlds. Our marriage wasn’t just an expression of love—it was a courageous choice to bridge cultural divides, embracing both Korean and American traditions as we built a shared future.
From our wedding day onward, our life was a balancing act—honoring the rich Korean heritage my wife brought to our family while also navigating the complexities of raising a multicultural, biracial family in America. It was challenging, beautiful, complicated, and deeply meaningful.

Together, my wife and I raised four Korean-American children—beautiful, resilient individuals who embody the complexity, joy, and strength of being rooted deeply in two cultures. Among our four children is a child with Down syndrome—a beautiful, resilient spirit whose life taught us the deepest lessons of unconditional love, patience, and understanding. Parenting a child with special needs brings unique challenges and profound joys. It opened our hearts wider than we imagined possible, teaching us empathy, resilience, and fierce advocacy.
