Weaving the Threads: How My Heritage Shaped My Storytelling
By Robert Stanek
Over the course of this series, I’ve shared deeply personal reflections on my heritage—stories of journeys, struggle, resilience, sacrifice, and courage spanning centuries and continents. Each of these heritage threads—French-Canadian, Norwegian, Midwestern American, twelve generations of military tradition, and diverse European ancestry from the Reynolds lineage—has profoundly shaped who I am.

But heritage isn’t just history; it’s a living, breathing influence that defines our values, guides our perspectives, and informs our storytelling. In my writing, these diverse heritages weave together powerfully, creating narratives defined by authenticity, empathy, resilience, and quiet heroism.
This final reflection explores how these heritage threads intertwine, influencing the characters, worlds, and stories I create—and deeply connecting readers across cultural, historical, and personal divides.
French-Canadian Courage: Adventure, Independence, Resilience
My French-Canadian heritage instilled in me values of courage, independence, resilience, and a pioneering spirit. Rooted deeply in Normandy, France, and shaped by the struggles of early Quebec settlers, this heritage taught me the quiet heroism found in exploring the unknown, braving uncertainty, and persevering through hardship.
These values profoundly shape my stories—characters who embody quiet courage, independent spirit, and deep resilience. In worlds like Ruin Mist, Magic Lands, and Bugville, readers encounter characters defined by bravery, exploration, and dignity in the face of adversity.

Norwegian Quiet Strength: Simplicity, Practicality, Endurance
My Norwegian heritage provided values of quiet strength, humility, practicality, and endurance. Originating from Sweden and Denmark, then settling in Norway before journeying to America, my Nordic ancestors modeled lives defined by practicality, resilience, and profound respect for community and nature.
These values permeate my storytelling. Characters often display quiet, practical courage—persevering through hardship with humility and dignity. Landscapes and communities reflect the profound respect for nature and simplicity learned from my Nordic ancestors, creating authentic, relatable worlds for readers.
Midwest Resilience: Humility, Community, and Empathy
My Midwestern roots in Wisconsin taught profound lessons about resilience, humility, community, and empathy. Early tragedy, poverty, and hardship forced maturity and responsibility upon me at a young age. Yet, Midwest communities quietly taught me dignity, kindness, perseverance, and the importance of small, everyday heroism.
These lessons shape my narratives deeply. Characters grapple authentically with adversity, community matters profoundly, and quiet heroism becomes ordinary yet profoundly meaningful. My stories validate experiences of hardship, survival, resilience, and quiet dignity—resonating authentically with readers across identities and experiences.
Military Heritage: Courage, Honor, Sacrifice, and Empathy
Twelve generations of military service have deeply influenced my understanding of duty, honor, courage, sacrifice, and resilience. My own experiences in combat left scars—visible and invisible—that profoundly shaped my empathy, humility, and storytelling authenticity.
This military heritage informs narratives defined by profound authenticity. Characters face struggles around duty, trauma, healing, and hope, reflecting universal truths about sacrifice and resilience. My storytelling honors the humanity behind military service, connecting deeply with veterans, families, and readers who value honest, compassionate portrayals of courage and vulnerability.
Reynolds Heritage: Integrity, Community, Quiet Courage
My Reynolds lineage—tracing ancestry through Britain, Wales, Scotland, and Switzerland—brings traditions of integrity, community, quiet courage, independence, and practicality. These ancestors’ quiet, steady resilience deeply influenced family values, shaping authentic, relatable characters and communities within my stories.
Characters reflect values of integrity, independence, and resilience. Communities authentically represent the quiet heroism and dignity inherited from my diverse Reynolds ancestors, creating deeply relatable worlds for readers across cultures.
Heritage Woven Together: Creating Authentic, Resonant Stories
These heritage threads—French-Canadian resilience, Norwegian strength, Midwest humility, military honor, Reynolds integrity—don’t exist separately. Instead, they intertwine powerfully within my storytelling, shaping deeply authentic narratives, relatable characters, and resonant themes that speak universally to readers.
My stories validate experiences of hardship, survival, and resilience precisely because they’re grounded in lived realities. They authentically reflect universal truths about courage, empathy, sacrifice, dignity, and quiet heroism, offering mirrors that readers across identities and backgrounds see themselves within.
Why Heritage Matters in Storytelling
Heritage matters profoundly because it grounds stories in authenticity, humanity, and universal resonance. When narratives authentically reflect lived experiences, readers connect deeply—feeling seen, understood, validated, and profoundly moved.
By openly sharing these diverse heritage influences, I build bridges of empathy and understanding with readers. My stories become invitations to explore our shared humanity—our struggles, triumphs, resilience, and quiet courage—across divides of culture, identity, and history.
